Dr. Herbert Birnbaum Features in the AO-HSC Program News

The Spring/Summer 2021 issue of the bulletin of the Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program, sponsored by Alpha Omega and Henry Schein, features Dr. Herbert Birnbaum—together with his brother Dr. Nathan Birnbaum and Dr. Nathan’s daughter, Dr. Heidi Aaronson. A lineage of famed dentists in the Boston area, they discuss their training and how they chose a career in dentistry. In addition, the interviews focus on their charitable work providing dental care to Holocaust survivors and the impact that the program has had improving the well-being of these survivors in the United States and elsewhere. The program is in its seventh year and provides oral health dignity to a dwindling population. The need of the program is testified in Dr. Birnbaum’s words:

“Holocaust awareness is no small ingredient of the Birnbaum family. My parents were Holocaust survivors whose love story began with a gaze across the barbed wire of a concentration camp, and it is no coincidence that I found similar love with my late wife, Connie, daughter of a survivor of Auschwitz. My father was a wise and inspirational force for Holocaust education and awareness in the Boston area and nationally. […] I am grateful to the AO-HSC Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program for the special gift of enabling me, through my profession, to make a difference in the lives of people who are so very appreciative and whose individual life stories resonate as an inspiration to me and a treasure to humanity.”
